A connection to local aviation

From Classroom to Community Landmark.

Built around 1876, the building began as a one-room schoolhouse known as Maple Grove School, later also referred to as Breckinridge School. It educated local children from 1876 until 1927, with an additional room added between 1909 and 1915 as the surrounding area grew.

In 1926, the school was consolidated with Melbourne Heights and the original Alex R. Kennedy schools. The building continued to house the first three grades until it closed the following year.

An Aviation Connection.

The nearby Bowman Field airport helped shape the inn’s identity. Over time, it became a gathering spot for pilots, mechanics, and neighbors, with its name and atmosphere reflecting Louisville’s early aviation culture.
