2802 Taylorsville Road
Just a short distance away, you’ll find one of Louisville’s most unique and historic neighborhood spots, Air Devil’s Inn. Located along Taylorsville Road near Bowman Field, this beloved local bar carries a story that dates back well before it ever served its first drink.
Originally built around 1876, the building began as a one room schoolhouse known as Maple Grove School, later also referred to as Breckinridge School. It served the community for decades, educating local children from 1876 until 1927. During that time, an additional room was added between 1909 and 1915 as the area continued to grow. In 1926, the school was consolidated with Melbourne Heights and the original Alex R. Kennedy schools, though it continued to house the first three grades until closing the following year.
After its closure, the property was sold by Jefferson County Public Schools in 1927 to George Hartman, who transformed the space into a gathering place known as Castle Gardens. A few years later, following the end of Prohibition, Hartman reimagined the property once again, renaming it Air Devil’s Inn and beginning to serve liquor in 1934.
Its proximity to Bowman Field, one of the oldest continuously operating airports in the country, helped shape its identity. Over time, it became a favorite spot for pilots, mechanics, and locals, with its name and atmosphere reflecting Louisville’s early aviation culture.
Today, Air Devil’s Inn remains a true neighborhood staple. Much of its original character still shines through, giving it a timeless, lived in feel that’s hard to find. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, live music, and loyal local following, it offers a genuine glimpse into Louisville’s past while continuing to be a place where people gather, connect, and create new memories.
Whether you’re stopping in for a drink, catching live music, or simply exploring a piece of local history, Air Devil’s Inn is a one of a kind experience just minutes away.
